Impact of Distance and Connection Type

When calculating data transfer rates, it’s important to understand that long-distance connections bring high latency and some loss. Similar behavior happens to network transfer times when connecting over Satellite or 4G/LTE - the round trip time could be as bad as 2,000 msec. Why TCP/IP Doesn't Work Well?

When using TCP/IP the sender waits for acknowledgment from the receiver.  The time it waits is defined by the TCP Window.  In a high-latency network (high rtt), acknowledgments are not received in a timely manner, which in turn makes the sender spend more time idle and not sending any new packets.

For example, a 1 Gbps line with 150 ms delay (latency), will behave like an 80 Mbps line when using TCP/IP.  TCP thoughts is 12x lower than the available bandwidth.

Data Size and Data Transfer Time

Your data transfer time depends on many factors: internet speed, latency, loss, network disconnects, and of course file sizes.  When sending very large files (many gigabytes or terabytes), it is important to control the size of the file chunks sent over the wire.  On a stable connection, sending large chunks is more efficient.  On the other hand, if the connection isn't stable, sending small chunks will prevent unnecessary data retransmission and provide an overall higher transfer speed.
