The Early Internet<\/h2>\n

The early Internet was predominantly a peer to peer system. \u00a0It was a network populated with academics and researchers, and computers connected to this network were largely equal in that each contributed as much information as they received.<\/p>\n

As the Internet matured, the client – server model came to dominate, especially with the advent of http and the World Wide Web. \u00a0In this system, roles were separated with consumers as \u201cclients\u201d connecting to \u201cservers\u201d somewhere on the network that would distribute content and data. \u00a0Serving a massive \u00a0audience required a \u00a0vast number of these servers.<\/div>\n
As demand grows in this model, performance declines and fragility increases. \u00a0The same number of servers must \u00a0meet the needs of a larger number of clients. \u00a0Sharing the growing load naturally degrades the performance available to each client. Additionally, such systems are inherently fragile. \u00a0With a single source of content at the servers, you introduce single points of failure that can result in complete downtime for an application.<\/div>\n

Peer to Peer Systems<\/h2>\n

Peer to peer systems are fundamentally different. \u00a0In these systems, every \u201cconsumer\u201d is also a \u201cproducer.\u201d \u00a0Using the language of the client server model, each participant is both \u201cclient\u201d and \u201cserver\u201d. \u00a0In this way peer to peer systems become organically scalable. \u00a0As more demand emerges for any content, so does more supply. \u00a0As demand grows, the system becomes incredibly fault tolerant and actually gets faster, in sharp contrast to the client server model, which gets noticeably slower, and more fragile under the same circumstances.<\/p>\n
