{"id":20,"date":"2015-02-10T14:30:51","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T22:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sync.gyre.wpengine.com\/2015\/02\/10\/syncing-mac-os-x-folders-and-sub-folders\/"},"modified":"2022-10-04T15:45:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T22:45:46","slug":"syncing-mac-os-x-folders-and-sub-folders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.resilio.com\/blog\/syncing-mac-os-x-folders-and-sub-folders","title":{"rendered":"Syncing Mac OS X Folders and Sub Folders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In today&#8217;s post, tech writer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rhymeswithdiploma.com\/\">TJ Luoma<\/a> shares how he uses Sync to set up the folder structure on his Mac, keeping things like his ~\/Library\/LaunchAgents\/ and\u00a0~\/Library\/QuickLook\/ folders synced.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<em>From TJ:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My last article for TUAW was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/01\/31\/bittorrent-sync-gives-you-the-flexibility-to-sync-anything\/\">BitTorrent Sync gives you the flexibility to sync anything<\/a>, which included a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tjluoma\/status\/562301167347064832\">farewell Easter egg<\/a>. However, I didn\u2019t have the time to explain a lot of what I use BitTorrent Sync\u00a0<em>for<\/em>, which is what I want to do\u00a0now.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I did was setup syncing for the standard OS X\u00a0folders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Desktop<\/li>\n<li>Documents<\/li>\n<li>Downloads<\/li>\n<li>Pictures<\/li>\n<li>Movies<\/li>\n<li>Music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re a Mac geek of a particular type, you are probably wondering if you can sync your\u00a0<strong>~\/Library\/Preferences\/<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>~\/Library\/Application Support\/<\/strong>\u00a0folders. I definitely would\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0recommend that, as I think it is just\u00a0<em>begging<\/em>\u00a0for trouble later on. However, there are a few sub-folders in there that you might want to\u00a0sync.<\/p>\n<p><strong>~\/Library\/LaunchAgents\/<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; I sync my LaunchAgents folder, but I use the\u00a0<strong>.sync\/IgnoreList<\/strong>\u00a0feature to\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0sync any file that begins with\u00a0<strong>com.<\/strong>\u00a0That actually prevents most from syncing automatically, but the ones that I make and\u00a0<em>do<\/em>\u00a0want to sync I prefix with\u00a0<strong>sync.com.tjluoma.<\/strong>\u00a0so I\u2019ll know those will sync to all of my Macs (I hinted about that in\u00a0Keep Desktop Clean By\u00a0Name).<\/p>\n<p><strong>~\/Library\/QuickLook\/<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This keeps my QuickLook\u00a0<code>.qlgenerator<\/code>\u00a0files sync\u2019d together, and I have a sync\u2019d LaunchAgent<code>plist<\/code>\u00a0which watches\u00a0<strong>~\/Library\/QuickLook\/<\/strong>\u00a0and runs\u00a0<code>\/usr\/bin\/qlmanage -r<\/code>\u00a0whenever it\u00a0changes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>~\/Library\/Application Support\/Screen Sharing\/<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; I sync this to keep my Screen Sharing\u00a0<strong>.vncloc<\/strong>\u00a0files in sync across my\u00a0Macs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\/Library\/Caches\/Homebrew\/<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; I use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mxcl.github.com\/homebrew\/\">Homebrew<\/a>\u00a0on all of my Macs and tend to install the same packages everywhere, so I sync the cache folder so I don\u2019t have to re-download the packages for each\u00a0Mac.<\/p>\n<p><strong>~\/.ssh\/<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This one will be controversial to some people who worry about security and who are right now terrified at the idea of someone managing to get into my ~\/.ssh\/ and muck about with it. But the reality is that my life is boring and no one is likely to ever try to do that, and it\u2019s convenient to have my\u00a0<code>known_hosts<\/code>,\u00a0<code>config<\/code>, and\u00a0<code>authorized_keys<\/code>\u00a0sync\u2019d. I added\u00a0<code>id_rsa*<\/code>to the\u00a0<strong>~\/.ssh\/.sync\/Ignorelist<\/strong>\u00a0so my private key doesn\u2019t actually\u00a0sync.<\/p>\n<h3>Folders Which Do Not Sync\u00a0Well<\/h3>\n<p>I tried syncing\u00a0<strong>~\/Library\/Safari\/Extensions\/<\/strong>\u00a0to keep my Safari extensions in sync, but Safari does not like that, and seemingly refuses to recognize new extensions which are added directly to that folder. (This is probably a security feature, in that it prevents some malicious installer from putting something in there which will take over your default searches, or something like\u00a0that.)<\/p>\n<p>I also tried to sync\u00a0<strong>\/usr\/local\/<\/strong>\u00a0because I generally install the same Homebrew things on each computer. That did not work well either, and I recommend avoiding\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>If you use a database app like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/devon-technologies.com\/products\/devonthink\/overview.html\">DEVONthink<\/a>\u00a0I would make sure that its database is not stored in ~\/Documents\/ because I am not sure that it would handle syncing\u00a0well.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, I would not recommend keeping your\u00a0<strong>iPhoto library<\/strong>\u00a0in ~\/Pictures\/ if you are going to sync it. Ditto for\u00a0<strong>iTunes<\/strong>\u00a0in ~\/Music\/. I moved my iTunes files to ~\/iTunes\/ ages ago because it didn\u2019t make sense to keep it in ~\/Music\/ when it also includes TV and\u00a0Movies.<\/p>\n<h3>Syncing to\u00a0Dropbox<\/h3>\n<p>I keep Dropbox running on my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/macminicolo.net\/\">MacMiniColo<\/a>\u00a0machine, and I sync my BTS folders to that machine too, which means that I do not have to worry about my BTS folders not being available for some\u00a0reason.<\/p>\n<p>I use and love\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sendtodropbox.com\/\">SendToDropbox<\/a>\u00a0which is a great way to email files to your Dropbox account. SendToDropbox saves those files to\u00a0<strong>~\/Dropbox\/Apps\/Attachments\/<\/strong>\u00a0so I sync that folder (using BTS) to my other Macs. I never really liked the name \u201cAttachments\u201d but using BTS I can name the folder whatever I like, so I call it\u00a0<strong>~\/SendToDropbox\/.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Other\u00a0Folders<\/h3>\n<p>All of my Macs share a\u00a0<strong>~\/BitTorrent Sync\/Torrents\/<\/strong>\u00a0folder so I can save a\u00a0<strong>.torrent<\/strong>\u00a0file to it. On my\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/macminicolo.net\/\">MacMiniColo<\/a>\u00a0machine that folder is actually\u00a0<strong>~\/Dropbox\/Torrents\/<\/strong>\u00a0and I have a Hazel rule on that Mac mini which launches<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transmissionbt.com\/\">Transmission<\/a>\u00a0whenever a new\u00a0<strong>.torrent<\/strong>\u00a0file is added to that folder. Transmission looks in that folder and automatically starts sharing the\u00a0torrent.<\/p>\n<p>This website is run on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.statamic.com\/\">Statamic<\/a>\u00a0which uses plain text files for its configuration and posts. I sync that folder to my Macs so I can write\/edit to my website from any of my\u00a0Macs.<\/p>\n<p>I have a nice short domain name which is conducive to making short URLs, and I wanted an easy way to add those. I wrote a shell script called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tjluoma\/302.sh\">302.sh<\/a>\u00a0which lets me automatically add those entries to my site\u2019s\u00a0<strong>.htaccess<\/strong>\u00a0file and syncs it to my website. The short URL for that script is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/luo.ma\/302\">http:\/\/luo.ma\/302<\/a>,\u00a0naturally.<\/p>\n<p>(The short URL for\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0article is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/luo.ma\/BitTorrentSync\">http:\/\/luo.ma\/BitTorrentSync<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3>Automatically start (or restart) BitTorrent\u00a0Sync<\/h3>\n<p>Because BitTorrent sync is a crucial piece of my setup, I have created a\u00a0<code>launchd<\/code>\u00a0plist which will not only launch BTS when my computer starts up, but will also automatically restart it if it\u00a0crashes. [1]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.resilio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-09-at-11.18.28-AM.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-jpJ3xhL9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.resilio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-09-at-11.18.28-AM-1024x501.png\" alt=\"BitTorrent Sync TJ Luoma\" width=\"1024\" height=\"501\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To install, first launch\u00a0<strong>BitTorrent Sync.app<\/strong>, go to preferences, and be sure to turn\u00a0<strong><em>off<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the option to have the app start at login. (That will be handled by\u00a0<code>launchd<\/code>\u00a0now\u00a0instead.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Quit\u00a0<strong>BitTorrent Sync.app<\/strong>\u00a0before\u00a0proceeding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once\u00a0<strong>BitTorrent Sync.app<\/strong>\u00a0is no longer running, enter these commands in\u00a0Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre><code>    mkdir -p ~\/Library\/LaunchAgents\/\n\n    cd ~\/Library\/LaunchAgents\/\n\n    curl -sfLO http:\/\/luo.ma\/sync.com.tjluoma.bittorrentsync.plist\n\n    launchctl load sync.com.tjluoma.bittorrentsync.plist<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>None of those lines will give you any feedback, but when you enter the last one, you should notice BitTorrent Sync\u00a0launch.<\/p>\n<h3>HTH<\/h3>\n<p>I hope this helps give you an idea of the ways that you can use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bittorrent.com\/sync\/\">BitTorrent Sync<\/a>\u00a0to keep any folder on your Mac in sync with other\u00a0Macs.<\/p>\n<h6>[1] This launchd technique will work for any app that you want to automatically restart after a crash. Just replace<code>&lt;string&gt;BitTorrent Sync&lt;\/string&gt;<\/code>\u00a0with\u00a0<code>&lt;string&gt;foo&lt;\/string&gt;<\/code>\u00a0where\u00a0<code>foo<\/code>\u00a0is the name of the app that you want to keep running if it crashes. I also have a similar one for Dropbox on my MacMiniColo\u00a0machine.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/luo.ma\/geek\/how-i-use-bittorrent-sync#fnref1:AutoRestart\" rev=\"footnote\"><br
